NCLEX-RN Australia for Indian Nurses: Ahpra, NMBA and OBA
Official sources checked September 22, 2026.
Quick answer
For an RN assigned to the relevant Australian assessment pathway, NCLEX-RN is the multiple-choice examination component. Start with Ahpra/NMBA’s current pathway guidance. Not every internationally qualified RN must follow OBA, and passing NCLEX alone does not grant Australian registration.
At a glance
| Authority | NMBA registration framework administered with Ahpra |
|---|---|
| Pathway decision | Current IQRN standard or applicable IQNM assessment |
| Stream B RN MCQ | NCLEX-RN, subject to official prior-result rules |
| OSCE | Separate assessment where required |
| Registration | All assigned stages and standards must be satisfied |
Check the pathway before booking an examination
The NMBA’s general registration standard introduced in April 2025 provides streamlined routes for eligible internationally qualified RNs with qualifying registration and practice in approved comparable jurisdictions. Applicants who do not meet that standard continue through the existing IQNM assessment process. Do not infer eligibility from Indian nationality or a U.S. exam pass alone. Review your education, registration and practice history against the actual standard and follow Ahpra’s instructions.
Where NCLEX fits within OBA
The official MCQ guidance describes Stream B candidates completing Orientation Part 1 and Portfolio before the MCQ examination, then progressing to OSCE after meeting the examination requirement. For RNs, that MCQ is NCLEX-RN. The page also describes recognition of a prior NCLEX pass within its specified period and evidence rules. Ask how your existing result is assessed before registering again; a recognised MCQ result does not remove every other assessment stage.
Account for the whole Australian process
The Australian application, education assessment, English language standard, practice requirements and registration decision are separate from Pearson examination registration. OSCE and other assessment costs may apply and should be quoted in their actual currencies. The cost planner therefore allows AUD items in addition to USD NCLEX fees and INR expenses. It does not treat a U.S. VisaScreen product as an Australian registration requirement.
Distinguish preparation from official assessment
NCLEX study can support the MCQ component, but a question bank is not an OSCE assessment or proof of readiness for Australian practice. Read the official candidate instructions for each assigned stage and keep their deadlines separate. Confirm actual registration before representing yourself as an Australian RN. Employment and immigration remain separate decisions and cannot be guaranteed by an examination pass or a course provider.
Plan your next steps
- Read the current international registration standard.
- Complete the applicable official pathway/self-check instructions.
- Submit education and registration evidence as requested.
- Confirm whether NCLEX is needed or a prior result is recognised.
- Complete the assigned assessment stages.
- Apply for and confirm registration under the official process.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Saying every Indian nurse must follow the same OBA route.
- Assuming a U.S. licence or NCLEX pass grants Australian registration.
- Ignoring AUD assessment and travel costs.
Three distinct pathways, not three automatic licences from one exam.

Common questions
Can an Indian nurse take NCLEX for Australia?
Where Ahpra/NMBA assigns an RN to an assessment pathway requiring it, NCLEX-RN serves as the MCQ examination. Stream B ordinarily progresses from orientation and portfolio to MCQ and OSCE, subject to recognised prior results. Other eligible IQRNs may use different registration pathways.
