California NCLEX-RN Application and Preparation Guide
Compare California, other-U.S. and international graduate pathways, BRN fees, education records and application tasks before scheduling NCLEX.
Quick answer
California BRN reviews education and application evidence before declaring examination eligibility. Its initial examination fee depends on where you graduated: $300 for California, $350 for another U.S. state or territory, and $750 for international graduates. Pearson registration is separate.
Use the correct California application route
The BRN examination page explains the route for candidates who have not already passed the required examination or been licensed as an RN in another state or U.S. territory. If you already have a licence or passing result, review the BRN’s relevant pathway rather than assuming you need to retest.
Apply through BreEZe using the current BRN instructions. Avoid a duplicate electronic application if you already submitted a paper application. Use the status portal for requests and progress; processing time is variable.
- Confirm the exact application type before paying.
- Keep application and Pearson registration receipts separately.
- Use the BRN processing-times page for current estimates.

International education needs a detailed review
California evaluates education against its nursing requirements. Its international-program guidance includes concurrent theory and clinical experience in specified nursing content areas. Concurrent means the related classroom and clinical learning occur in the same instructional period. A licence from another place does not erase an education deficiency.
Use the BRN’s education breakdown, transcript and international verification forms. The examination page currently directs international transcripts to be mailed to the board. Provide its certified-translation form when records are not in English.
- Ask the school to complete required education records accurately.
- Keep course and clinical records available if the BRN requests more detail.
- Follow a BRN deficiency notice instead of buying an unrelated course.

Plan the actual costs and identity requirements
The BRN publishes separate initial examination fees of $300, $350 and $750 for the three graduate categories. Fingerprint service charges, optional permits and Pearson registration are additional where applicable. The cost planner distinguishes these items and leaves unknown expenses blank.
California’s online examination instructions require an SSN or ITIN. These are U.S. tax identifiers, not a nursing licence or work permit. Do not use another person’s identifier or substitute a foreign identification number. If you cannot provide the required identifier, ask the BRN about your situation before paying.
- Check the fee schedule immediately before payment.
- Use the BRN fingerprint instructions for the correct method.
- Request testing accommodations through the official application process if needed.

Your California planning checklist
Check the applicable route, education evidence, fingerprint process, identifier requirement, fees and any requested supplemental documents. Mark tasks complete only after you have evidence; document delivery and board acceptance are separate milestones.
After eligibility and Pearson registration produce your ATT, check its validity and schedule. Study the national RN test plan while you complete administrative tasks. California application progress does not establish examination readiness, and practice readiness does not establish California eligibility.
- Record who sends transcripts and required forms.
- Resolve missing information through BreEZe and official BRN contacts.
- Save ATT dates, appointment confirmation and accepted-ID requirements.
